CHANGE OF SEASONS CHECKLIST

Summer is still here for another month but don’t let that deter you from getting a head start on those fall projects. It’s a great time to inspect how your home’s systems are functioning.

Keep an eye on the following systems and bear in mind many contractors get much busier this time of year (we call it the “Fall Rush”, as many homeowners are hurriedly trying to get their projects wrapped up before winter):

Exterior Grounds and Landscape:

  • Irrigation- ensure no leaks and all heads working properly (winterize when appropriate)

  • Washout- check landscaping below roof eaves and downspouts for washout.

  • Egress- ensure all entrances are unencumbered for access in case of emergency.

Building Envelope:

  • Roof & Gutter Systems- ensure no leaks and gutters work as designed

  • Windows & Doors- ensure they fully seal when opening and closing (check garage doors also)

  • Garage Doors- ensure properly working (very dangerous if the springs are loose).

Building Internal Systems:

  • Septic/City Sewer- ensure no back ups and leaks connecting the home to external utilities.

  • Plumbing and Electrical- ensure no plumbing leaks and circuits work properly.

  • HVAC and Vent systems- ensure filters and vents are clean and clear and that all equipment works properly. Clean out dryer vents at least once a year (fire hazard if left uncleaned).

  • Appliances- ensure these are working correctly. Check for gas & plumbing leaks.

Your home is your safe place.  Taking the time to review these and any other systems you have, can save you costly repairs.

We recommend preventive versus restorative measures because preventive is far less stressful and also much easier on the wallet.
